PillCam™ Effective Tool for Diagnosing Digestive Disease

Arizona Gastroenterology tackling digestive disease with cutting edge technology

Tucson, AZ (05/20/09) – New technology is key in helping patients live longer and healthier lives. The physicians of Arizona Gastroenterology are utilizing treatments at the forefront of medical technology. It is a guiding force at the practice.

One innovative treatment is particularly cutting edge. Capsule endoscopy with the PillCam™ SB video capsule enables the Arizona Gastroenterology team to examine a patient’s entire small intestine … just by having them ingest a small pill.

It’s quick, easy and painless. The patient ingests a vitamin-sized video capsule, the PillCam™, equipped with its own internal camera and light source. While the PillCam™ travels through the body, it sends images to a data recorder belt worn on the patient’s waist. The capsule is disposable and passes naturally through the body. Arizona Gastroenterology doctors will view the images on a video monitor after the eight hour exam.

The PillCam™ is routinely used to discover the cause for recurrent symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, bleeding, or anemia.

The PillCam™ can also be used to obtain data on other digestive issues. Research suggests that the PillCam™ may be an effective way to diagnose celiac disease, a digestive condition triggered by consumption of the protein gluten. If those who have celiac disease eat foods containing gluten, an immune reaction occurs in the small intestine, causing damage to the surface of the small intestine and an inability to absorb certain nutrients. The PillCam™ may give doctors a better insight as how to treat and prevent damage to the small intestine caused by Celiac Disease. National Celiac Awareness Month is recognized in May.
