Early Colorectal Screenings Save Lives

Get educated on digestive health during Colon Cancer Awareness Month

Tucson, AZ (3/16/09) – Did you know colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths? The good news: 90% of these kinds of fatalities is thought to be preventable with early screenings. March marks National Colon Cancer Awareness Month. Arizona Gastroenterology is leading the charge by promoting early screening in Southern Arizona.

Throughout the month of March, Arizona Gastroenterology will be handing out dark blue rubber bracelets as a reminder of the inspiration and strength of colon cancer patients and survivors. Dark blue is the national symbol of Colon Cancer Awareness.

Arizona Gastroenterology is helping patients understand the importance of colorectal cancer identification and prevention. As there are often no symptoms with colorectal cancer, the physicians at Arizona Gastroenterology encourage screenings, which can catch polyps or non-cancerous grape-sized growths in the colon. Both men and women are equally at risk.

Regular colorectal screenings or testing beginning should begin at age 50 for both men and women. This procedure is the most powerful weapon against colorectal cancer. It takes about 10 to 15 years from their first appearance for abnormal cells to develop into colorectal cancer. Patients should be screened early if colon cancer or colon disease runs in their family.

Arizona Gastroenterology physicians stress the importance of early screening for people of African American and Hispanic descent. African Americans’ rate of being diagnosed with colon cancer is higher than any other population group in the U.S, with Hispanics’ being second.

The message is plain and simple – early colorectal screenings save lives. Spread the word! Contact Arizona Gastroenterology to set up your colorectal screening today by calling (520) 742-4139 or by visiting www.azgastroenterology.com.
