The Silent Killer: Colorectal Cancer

Awareness May Save Your Life

Tucson, AZ (2/11/08) - FACT: Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. FACT: 90% of those deaths are thought to be preventable with early screenings.

There is good news: colorectal cancer is treatable. One of the most powerful weapons in preventing colorectal cancer is regular colorectal screenings or testing beginning at age 50 for both men and women. It takes about 10 to 15 years from their first appearance for abnormal cells to develop into colorectal cancer. Arizona Gastroenterology plans to lead the campaign in Tucson this March during National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

Arizona Gastroenterology is helping its patients understand the importance of colorectal cancer identification and prevention. As there are often no symptoms with colorectal cancer, the physicians at Arizona Gastroenterology encourage screenings, which can catch polyps or non-cancerous grape-sized growths in the colon. Both men and women are equally at risk.

To help promote colorectal cancer awareness, the Buddy Bracelet Campaign was initiated in 2004 by the Prevent Cancer Foundation, encouraging people to “Wear it, Share it, Because You Care.” Buddy Bracelet wearers bring attention to the fact that colorectal cancer is largely preventable, treatable and beatable through regular screenings.

The seven physicians who make up Arizona Gastroenterology believe one of the most influential ways to focus your efforts is to target your legislators. The State of Arizona has received a failing grade for requiring insurance providers to cover the cost of colorectal cancer screenings. Our state is failing to save the lives of its citizens.

The message from Arizona Gastroenterology this March and every month is to be conscious of your health. Contact Arizona Gastroenterology to set up your colorectal screening today by calling (520) 742-4139 or by visiting www.azgastroenterology.com.
